Welcome to Värmland of Scandinavia
tep into the wild and open your mind. Since the dawn of time Värmland has been blessed with scenery made for the imagination. Some believe that it’s our wilderness that has spawned our great folklore and story telling tradition. Did you know that the first woman writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature was from Värmland? Her name was Selma Lagerlöf and she won in 1909, “in appreciation of the lofty idealism, vivid imagination and spiritual perception that characterize her writings”. Her family home in Mårbacka is still one of our greatest tourist attractions.
But she is just one of many famous poets and novelists from Värmland. Throughout the province you’ll encounter legends, myths, fairy tales and fables, told and re-told during the course of history. We are considered to be a cheerful people, full of charm and wit. And you’d be out of luck trying to find a person born and raised in Värmland who couldn’t tell you at least one tale from their local area. One could even argue that our famous writers are just people who bothered to write our stories down.
You’ll find Värmland between Stockholm and Oslo, the grand capitals of Sweden and Norway. Our magnificent province is home to maybe the most diverse environment in Scandinavia. The landscape is a mixture of lakes, rivers, streams, mountains and forests. Its picturesque qualities might be the explanation for why Värmland has always been blessed with a tradition of story telling.
Compared to other parts of Sweden we might be seen as a humble contributor to the country’s total population. Our province is large and home to the major city of Karlstad and a range of smaller towns, but leaving them still means an opportunity of facing true wilderness. Värmland is famous for its fishing waters and hunting possibilities. And the Swedish right of public access makes almost everything available to anyone – just as long as you show your surroundings the proper respect.
